This week’s post was thrown together as I completely lost track of the days and all of sudden it is now Wednesday! How did I do for a written on the day blog post?
This weeks topic is Favorite Creepy Settings
1. Overlook Hotel in The Shining by Stephen King
Before I had even read this book, I had visited The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, CO. This hotel was the inspiration for the Overlook Hotel in the book. Now, after reading the book, I never want to step foot in there again! The novel being set inside a hotel gave an extra creepy factor to the novel as there are only so many locations for action to take place. Basically, this means the hotel itself is like one big haunted house. For me, the most creepy setting of the novel was the hotel’s topiary garden and when it “comes alive.”
2. The island of Vane in The Lie Tree by Francis Hardinge
The island of Vane and its residents really added a creepy feel to this novel. Setting wise the different locations like the cave and her father’s study really made the spine tingle, while the characters themselves made an uncomfortable feeling settle around you. If you get a chance to read this book, please do, as it is a very interesting read.
3. London in Stalking Jack The Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco
London in the time of Jack the Ripper was a very hunting place. The books really brings the creepy feel of that time to life! I absolutely loved this book and the imagery that the author includes let’s you paint a graphic image as you traverse the streets with Wadsworth and Cresswell! – You can my find my review of this novel here! I fully recommend this book if you are looking for a chilling read this Halloween season!
4. Alchemists facility in Silver Shadows by Richelle Mead
The Re-Education facility in the Bloodlines series was absolutely terrifying. It creeped me out more than any strigoi could have. The measures that the alchemists took to re-educate their people, showed you a more disturbing layer to the Alchemists. Their thought processes in their world of vampires, damphirs and strigoi was more unsettling then you would have originally thought.
5. Allerdale Hall in Crimson Peak
This one is cheating a bit as Crimson Peak is a movie, but they did write a companion book so it counts…right? I immediately thought about Allerdale Hall as I thought of my favorite creepy settings. The dreariness of the house along with the appearances of the crimson colored ghosts really set the tone for this fantastic ghost story. The use of imagery really pulls you into the plot and gives you a chill all at the same time! If you are a fan of a good ol’ ghost story, please check out this film! You will love it!

Kimberly ~ Whimsical Narratives
Hi Kimberly!! I love that you snuck on a movie! I was like I didn’t know that movie started as a book…? Then you say movie! I thought the creep factor was high in it, great choice… The Lie Tree sounds so intriguing too… I love to bake all sorts of pumpkin and spice goodies! They pair well with a good book!!
I love top 5 Wednesday… Here is my post if you’re interested in my choices <3 http://wp.me/p3LRfZ-6ho
I agree with the Pumpkin goodies! I just checked and the book is a novelization of the movie it came out on the on Oct. 20th 2015, a few days after the movie came out. I actually want to pick it up and see how the novelization compares to the movie’s eeriness.
So intriguing… I have to agree… I would love to check that out too… adaptions always fascinated me even when they’re bad… so a novelization would be neat to try!
