Nine of Swords by Brooklyn Quintana is a fantastical read steeped with magic, mystery, and mayhem! The story follows Fynneas Fog and his fellow classmates as they navigate the tumultuous ride that is their first year at Morancy Academy of Military Arts.
My Review
The Plot
The book for me had three distinct sections to it that helped build the fantasy world of Nine of Swords and move the story along, while still containing a mysterious overarching plot through the book. We had the opening which set up the background of Prince Fynneas and his family and started the mystery that would continue to raise questions. Then we move onward to Morancy Academy for parts two and three where we truly dive into the story and watch all the characters grow and change with the plot as secrets are withheld, friendships are built, and the world of Nine of Swords grows as we traverse the first year as well as the end of the year games. There were quite a few twists that I was shocked by and I’m very interested in seeing where it all will lead in Book 2.
The Setting
The main setting of this book was one of the reasons I was drawn to the book at first and accepted the book for review. We have what feels like a very medieval castle and village feel when it comes to Morancy Academy but instead of rolling hills and mountains the main setting is a tropical island with jungles and an array of dangerous creatures. The setting plays a big role in this book as sailing is a key element for sections of the story and I think it adds an element of surprise and originality letting the author work and play with different elements that aren’t typical of this kind of narrative.
The Characters
The Characters!! There are so many fantastic personalities in this book that it is hard to choose a favorite character. Even though Fynneas is the main character, the story is very much an ensemble, and each character brings something special to the book. I can’t leave the characters section without giving a nod to our two animal friends, Buttons and Dug. I’m definitely a fan of these two…I mean who doesn’t love animal sidekicks?
In The End
Overall, this book was a five-star read and I definitely look forward to the day I reread it and see all the foreshadowing I missed the first time. I’ll definitely be picking up Book 2 titled, Blood in the Water cause I have a lot of questions that need answers! Thank you to the author, Brooklyn Quintana, for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, I’m so glad I said Yes!
Until the next review, take care, and happy reading everyone!
