Characters I Would Defend – Top 5 Wednesday

This weeks topic is Characters I Would Defend

This topic was so difficult for me. I went a couple different routes when choosing characters for this topic, but I feel like I did pretty well.

Severus Snape – Harry Potter

I’m on Team Snape. When the final couple books were coming out, the main argument wasn’t if Harry would kill Voldemort or vice versa it was about if you thought Snape was good or evil. I always thought he was on the Order’s side. Yes, he may have had some misdirected anger when it came to Neville, but I can still understand where he is coming from and in the end, he continued to protect Harry because of his love for Lily Potter and helped make sure that Voldemort was defeated. 10 points to Slytherin!

 

Apparently, this Ravenclaw is going to appreciate all of her favorite Slytherins today in this blog post. Next up is…

Draco Malfoy – Harry Potter

I see Draco, just as I see Harry, Hermione, Ron, and all the other students. They are all children who were thrust into a war that had begun long before their time. Draco, unfortunately, was born into the side of Evil with his father being a Deatheater during the rise of Voldemort. For me, I see his actions as those of a scared boy who is fearful of what a crazed man could do to his family if he disobeys. There are times in the books that we see Draco’s facade break and that he isn’t truly the evil character that people see him to be. He drops his wand when Dumbledore tells him he has a choice and his fear keeps him from identifying the Trio when they are in Malfoy Manor. At the end of the day, I think that fear was to overwhelming for him to deal with. He made decisions the best he could with what he had been dealt and you can’t blame him for that.

 

Tessa Grey – The Infernal Devices

I’m not really sure what other readers opinions of Tessa are but for me, I would defend her with every ounce of energy I could muster. When I read the books and met Tessa I immediately related to her on a strong level. It’s almost hard to put into words the connection I feel with her. Of course, the love of reading and books but I also think that I really value a lot of her personality traits like her strength which is very understated but powerful and that kinda of strength is hard to read. Plus, how kick ass is she when it comes to the end with the clockwork angel. She is my book character spirit animal. So, no matter what anyone else says I will be quick to her defense.

 

Katniss Everdeen – Hunger Games

I sometimes think that Katniss get a bad rap for being a little stubborn and unpredictable, but these characteristics lead her to make decisions based on her morals and what is right, instead of what people tell her is right. The decisions she makes are for what she believes is the good of the many and not the few and it makes for interesting dynamics for her story and makes her a powerful female protagonist.

 

I saw my final character in a few other posts and never even thought about defending him because I never thought of him in that way but I think he needs a little love!

Charlie Kelmeckis – The Perks of Being a Wallflower

From reading other blog posts today, the reasoning for coming to Charlie’s defense was that some see his character as over dramatic. I read that and decided to include him in my post as well. What Charlie has been through during his life and the mental illness he suffers from could never lead me to call him overdramatic. Dealing with a friend’s suicide and being sexually abused by a family member is not something to take lightly and his reactions to those triggers in his life could clearly cause him to panic, breakdown, and withdraw. The Charlie you see in the book is, in my opinion, a realistic depiction of how one person could handle all of that. Charlie has a long journey to still go at the end, but he did it on his own for a long time before telling his family about Aunt Helen. He suffered and endured through a lot and he made it through and I like to believe he will continue to make through.

I hope you all enjoyed this weeks Top 5 Wednesday post. I  have also achieved the goal that I set for myself at the start of this blog. My goal was to post for each topic during the month of May for Top 5 Wednesday and the fact that you are reading post #4 means I have accomplished just that. I’m enjoying writing these blog posts so this is definitely not the end…it’s just the beginning.
