This weeks topic is Book Theme Songs
I’m not usually one to listen to music when I read or associate a song with a book as I’m reading it. This topic was challenging but I really love the choices I have to share. Let’s get on you my top 5 picks for book theme songs starting with:
You’ll Be Back (from Hamilton) by Lin-Manuel Miranda
The Mortal Instruments: CoG, CoFA, CoLS, and CoHF by Cassandra Clare
I could write a very long detailed paragraph full of imagery about why this song reminds me of these books and Sebastian or what I picture when I think of Sebastian singing it but I’ll save that for another post later. Simply, there is something about this song that when I first heard the lyrics I immediately thought of Sebastian. The line, “kill your friends and family to remind you of my love,” really drove that first feeling home. I can picture him uttering these words to Clary so clearly.
Hedwig’s Theme
Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
This one is my obvious choice and is one that comes from the movies, but that I now associate with the books or anything Harry Potter related. Let’s be honest, I’m hoping it pops up in the play somehow. I can’t help but hum this tune whenever I’m rereading the books.
It’s Time by Imagine Dragons
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
Again, I’m also looking at the movie. I felt so drawn to the story because of this song. I wanted to know more and more about it as I watched the trailer. I read the book after I saw the movie for the first time, so that might be why I bring this song forward when I think of the book. This song definitely worked for the movie and also associates with the book really well and the messages that the book brings forward.
Welcome To New York by Taylor Swift
The Epic Adventures of Lydia Bennet by Kate Rorick and Rachel Kiley
In a small part of this book, Lydia adventures to NYC to visit Jane and learns more about herself and grows more into her own then we have ever seen before. She grew a bit in LBD and the beginning of the novel as well but it came more here than anywhere else. In the end, NYC opened up so many doors and experiences and new ways of thinking for Lydia and I feel that this song really shows those changes and feelings.
The Way We Were by Carrie Hope Fletcher
Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare
This song caught me by surprise. I was just playing random songs while brainstorming for this post when I listened to the lyrics again and realized how much it reminded me of the relationship between Mark Blackthorn and Kieran. For me, it really speaks about their time during the Wild Hunt and how complicated it became when he returned to the LA Institute and his family. Everything for them changed they “played games” and by the end, everything went “back to the way that they were” before Mark was taken by the Wild Hunt. Some parts may not fit exactly but their relationship popped so clearly, in my mind when I heard the song.
I will be paying more attention to songs and books and how they correlate with each other more after writing this blog post. I would see authors post book playlist or things similar but never really gave it much thought. I guess I always thought of a song as having its own story and I never thought about how it could add more emotion to another story. Funny…that is exactly what literature, music, and other art forms do for our own lives every day.
“Ah, music,” he said, wiping his eyes. “A magic beyond all we do here!”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
