This weeks topic is Character Names
Ellis Lacey (AY-lish or EYE-lish) from Brooklyn by Colm Tóibín
There is something about Irish names that just sounds absolutely beautiful to me. I also love that a good portion of the time they sound completely different than how they look. I always find them fun and intriguing. The name Eilis just sounds beautiful.
Ètienne St. Clair from Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
Let’s all be real with ourselves. We all fell in love with the name before the boy on this one. It matches the character perfectly with his characterization of where he is from and his relations. The name just sounds all kinds of lovely!
Alistair Gilliam from Shades of London by Maureen Johnson
The name Alistair Gilliam couldn’t be more perfect for the book reading, poetry-loving, and The Smiths listening ghost of the library. Alistair is a ghost that has been on his own for so long that he is used to it and it doesn’t seem to bother him. Though, I do get some brooding undertones from him, which makes me love him even more. The name just seems to fit his character perfectly.
Xenophilius Lovegood from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling
A quirky name for a very quirky guy. Xeno means relating to foreigners or different in origin. I think this name definitely speaks to the Lovegood household as Xenophilius along with Luna, look at the world through a very different lens than the other characters and are very original and foreign in their thinking. Bonus: His name is just really fun to say.
Members of The Black Dagger Brotherhood from The Black Dagger Brotherhood
I’m lumping all these names into this one group. Tohrment, Phury, Zsadist, The Destroyher(Butch), Vishous, and Rhage. I love how J.R. Ward changes the spellings to create a unique quality to the Brotherhood. It gives it a much more ancient feel, which as the names are sometimes passed down makes sense. Also, I feel like the spellings give more of a punch to the fact that they are warriors, though the names themselves do a good job of that.
Do you have a favorite author that creates amazing character names or a character name in general that you love? Let me know in the comments!
